Jun 24, 2024 | Recipes

Bannock is a type of fry bread that originated in Scotland. It was brought to Canada, where the indigenous people adopted it. Bannock can be breakfast, brunch or with a cup of tea. To make it extra Canadian, serve it with maple syrup.

Ingredientsโ€ฏย

  • 1 cup all purpose flour (or gluten free flour)
  • 1 tsp aluminum free baking powder
  • 1/4 sea salt
  • 2 tbsp neutral oil, such as avocado oil
  • 1 tbsp filtered water, as needed
  • 1/2 cup raisins (optional)

Preparationโ€ฏย

  1. In a large bowl, combine all dry ingredients. Add raisins if using.
  2. Mix in the oil and a bit of water at a time. It should just come together without being too wet or sticky.
  3. Knead into a ball and then flatten to about 2 inches thick.
  4. Fry in oil on medium heat for 5 minutes per side, or bake in the oven for 20 minutes at 325ยฐ.
  5. Serve with pure maple syrup!ย
